Human activities have a high risk of contaminating marine environments. Recently, a growing number of new contaminants (such as nanoplastics and microplastics) have found their way into the Arctic and Antarctic's pristine habitats. Industrial waste, chemicals (including chemical weapons), wastewaters, rubbish, and other waste from terrestrial sources have been dumped in the oceans for years. Some compounds, such as radionuclides, have been forbidden from being dumped in recent years, yet they nevertheless exist in the environment. Modern remote sensing techniques, improved access to geographical data, data on environmental quality, and advances in analytical chemistry are all helping to expand our understanding of marine waste. The growing volume of marine plastic waste offers issues, not just in terms of collection, but also in terms of the plastic's future recyclability.
